CASJ Coordinator

The Jacksonville Urban League is a nonprofit, special-service, and advocacy organization that works to fulfill its mission of empowering communities and changing lives. Founded in 1947 as an affiliate of the National Urban League, the League has focused on a holistic approach to its goal of providing individuals and families the tools that can empower them toward a productive and successful life. Since its founding, more than six decades ago, the League has remained steadfast to service – including early education, housing education, and repairs, increasing employment opportunities, creating economic and social justice initiatives, and bolstering economic development in disadvantaged neighborhoods.

JUL's Center for Advocacy and Social Justice is seeking a CASJ Intern Coordinator to assist the CASJ Director and Social Justice Advocacy Coordinator in developing the CASJ Social Justice Advocacy Program. The Internship Program has worked with over 70 universities nationwide providing meaningful internships for a variety of programs and topics. The Coordinator is required to work 15-20 hours per week for the duration of their internship.

Support interns that are focusing on these topics: Public Health (health access, issues related to COVID-19, dental access, mental health), Education (related to the school-to-prison pipeline and the Center for Children's Rights), LGBTQ+ Issues (recent legislation), Voter Suppression (Neighborhood Bill of Rights), Criminal Justice Reform (reducing violence and improving community-law enforcement relations), Racial Healing and Reconciliation Discussions Project, and Community Organizing.

The CASJ Internship Program operates year-round but is generally organized by semesters. Students are given the opportunity to gain valuable experience in fields focused on developing and implementing social justice public policy.

The responsibilities of this position include:
○ Recruit and oversee the onboarding of interns, assisting them in developing their work plans and projects for the semester
○ Working with the Executive Director to develop and update the strategic plan for the Center for Advocacy and Social Justice and the activities of interns and others engaged in the Center.
○ Mentor and provide guidance to the CASJ interns
○  Provide support for students drafting papers on a subject concerning social justice and equality.
○  Supporting students as they organize and lead town halls that engage the community in the subject.
○ Lead weekly meetings with an agenda and take notes.
