Intern, Volunteer Engagement

An internship with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting.

The National MS Society is offering an exciting internship within the Volunteer Engagement department. This paid internship can provide school credit and offers valuable experience in the non-profit, engagement, relationship management, and event planning industries. Candidates must have excellent customer service skills, be self-motivated, a team player, results-oriented, and dedicated to making a difference in the lives of people living with and affected by MS.

Intern(s) will assist with the execution of all Volunteer Engagement functions. These tasks will include volunteer outreach, recruitment, communications, cultivation, and recognition for two (2) Bike MS events taking place in September 2023 season. This role also includes some administrative, database management, and research activities.

What You Will Do:
Day to Day
  • Volunteer Recruitment & Cultivation (90%)
  • Volunteer Engagement Strategy (10%)

Specific Responsibilities -- Each day this intern will work closely with the Volunteer Engagement Specialist in the following areas:
  • Developing outreach lists and making calls to potential volunteers,
  • Cultivating new volunteer groups and individual recruitment,
  • Setting up and fulfilling maintenance in Galaxy Digital (volunteer platform)
  • Continuously updating and maintaining database records
  • Assisting with in-kind sponsorships related to volunteer engagement (where applicable)
  • Building volunteer recruitment committee trainings

Learning Objectives -- Intern(s) will receive a thorough overview of non-profit volunteer engagement work, most specifically related to fundraising events.
  • Gain relevant work experience in non-profit volunteer engagement field (60%)
  • Learn strategies to increase participant engagement through cultivation, recruitment and committee engagement (20%)
  • Gain experience working within a team and committee environment (10%)
  • Opportunity to learn about multiple sclerosis and work with the leading national organization supporting people impacted by MS (10%)

Requirements
What You Will Bring:
  • Currently pursuing a degree as a rising Junior or Senior in College or any year in graduate school
  • Open to all majors
  • Ability to work 10-15 weeks, 10-20 hours per (Start date in June through August/September 2023; specific dates are flexible)
  • Access to reliable internet
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software for e-mail, document, and spreadsheet creation/management -- specific training will be provided
  • Ability to represent the National MS Society in a professional manner
  • Detail oriented and strong organizational skills
  • Great written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be personable, outgoing and self-motivated
  • Ability to work part of a team and independently
  • Capacity to lead a group of volunteers to complete tasks/projects
  • Adaptable, flexible and open to projects with a desire to learn
  • Ability to step up as a leader when the opportunity presents itself
  • Attendance at Bike MS: Deception Pass Classic and/or Oregon in person is ideal to wrap up the internship but not required

This paid internship is available for Summer 2023 and can be hybrid (remote/in-office). The hourly rate is $16. If you are unable to be paid for this internship due to outside funding or other directives from your educational institution -- please let your hiring manager know AFTER you have been identified as the final candidate.

All internship offers are contingent upon the candidate showing proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (with a COVID-19 FDA-approved vaccine or a COVID-19 vaccine granted Emergency Use Authorization) by the start date of the internship. A candidate is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after receiving the second dose of a two-dose vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) or one dose of a single dose vaccine (Johnson & Johnson/Janssen) or as defined by the Center for Disease Control.
