Communications & Outreach Intern - Sophomore On-Campus Internship Program

The UNC Asheville Sophomore On-Campus Internship Program provides funding for sophomore students to pursue a project-based experience related to their targeted areas of career exploration while enrolled in a reflection-based course. This experience is intended to be a first step before pursuing an off-campus internship. 

Communications & Outreach Intern - Spring 2023 Internship Opportunity

The intern will work alongside the Director, Faculty Fellow, Associate Director, and AmeriCorps VISTA to coordinate Key Center communications about our programs and services for multiple audiences (faculty/staff, student leaders/organizations, and community organizations). The supervisor is open to tailoring the internship experience based on the intern's strengths and interests.

Responsibilities, Tasks, & Deliverables

  • Produce Key Center annual report (primarily graphic design with little content creation)
  • Create a marketing and communications plan and identify key practices to support the long-term sustainability of the plan
  • Increase social media presence and engagement (primarily on Instagram)
  • Develop branded looks for different offerings (academic, on-campus, off-campus)
  • Update Key Center information slide deck
  • Design signage for department/programs, as well as posters for tri-folds
  • Create website and marketing materials specifically for Food Access and SNAPS Benefits
  • Coordinate communications for multiple audiences
  • Community partners: managing communication with select community partners and coordinate database updates (minimum technology skills needed)
  • Faculty: research community engaged work happening on campus (may include online research, informational interviews, attending campus events, etc.)
  • Students: creation of marketing materials and promotion of events
  • Build cohesive, comprehensive campus communications plan
  • Create campus digest of community engagement at UNCA and in the community
  • Social & print media, branding, basic video editing, etc.
  • Coordinate recognition efforts of community engagement on- and off-campus
  • Academic marketing plan (including service learning courses, Community Engaged Scholars, & Internships via posters, website, social media, photos, etc.)

Student + Application Requirements
 
  • Sophomore standing 
  • 2.5 GPA or higher 
  • In your cover letter, address how the internship aligns with current career goals
  • Complete a minimum of 105 hours of internship experience, including the completion of at least one project deliverable with the guidance of their internship supervisor
  • Must enroll in IST 325 for Spring 2022, a 3 credit hour interdisciplinary internship course 
  • Must complete a pre- and post-self evaluation
  • Must create and submit a video demonstrating their learning and reflection at the end of the internship experience

Timeline

  • Applications are due by 11:59PM on December 16
  • Interviews between December 19 and January 11 and be coordinated by individual supervisors
  • All required hiring documentation will be completed and submitted on January 12 + 13
  • Interns will enroll in IST 325 and attend the first course session on January 13
  • Internships will take place between the second Monday of the spring semester through the end of the semester

Students planning to apply for any of the on-campus internships should ensure they have all necessary hiring documents on-hand for the January paperwork process.
