Building Manager Fall 2023

Highsmith Student Union Overview:
Highsmith Student Union is more than just a building. The mission of Highsmith Student Union is to provide a dynamic and inclusive experience where quality facilities and services meet engaging programs and activities centered around helping students excel well beyond graduation.

Job Summary:     
Building Managers are responsible for event setups, assisting building patrons, building security, and maintaining the day-to-day operations in Highsmith Student Union. Building Managers also act as leadership support for other student-staffed areas of the building. Some tasks include lifting and set-up of event and technical equipment, handling money from the guest services desk and game room, opening and closing the building, answering questions, and accommodating Highsmith Student Union guests or event speakers. Shifts are 2-6 hours and may be adjusted semester-to-semester. Nights and Weekends may be required. 

A. Primary job responsibility
  1. Set-up and break down event spaces
  2. Provide basic audio/visual set-up, when necessary
  3. Monitor overall security and safety of the building
  4. Identify and assist with immediate operations issues in the building
  5. Consistently interact with members of the university and public guests in the building
  6. Model appropriate behavior and provide leadership for other Highsmith student staff
  7. Execute initial emergency procedures (such as building evacuations or medical emergencies) until professional staff and/or first responders can step in
  8. Inspect rooms for damages and cleanliness
  9. Check bulletin boards for unauthorized or outdated posters and flyers and remove them as necessary
  10. Attend weekly Building Manager meetings and monthly Highsmith student staff meetings
  11. Create and maintain a safe and inclusive environment for all Highsmith patrons
  12. Drive University vehicles to conduct University business on behalf of Highsmith Student Union (when required)
  13. Uphold and enforce community standards for health safety, including the current COVID-19 Pandemic
  14. Other duties as assigned

  1. Knowledge of Highsmith Student Union and Building Manager policies and procedures.   
  2. Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  3. Knowledge of cash handling policies and procedures.
  4. Ability to learn new software programs.
  5. One Port Time Management Software
  6. General knowledge of audio/visual equipment
  7. Demonstrates initiative
  8. Ability to work in a team environment
  9. Cumulative 2.5 GPA
  10. General knowledge of Highsmith Student Union and UNC Asheville 

C. Physical Requirements
  1. Lifting up to 75 pounds (paper cases & supplies)
  2. Bending and reaching
  3. Standing and/or sitting for long periods of time
  4. Handwork
