About the Student Environmental Center:

A student-led initiative, the Student Environmental Center (SEC) engages students, faculty, staff, and the Asheville community in conversation, advocacy, and action around environmental issues, broadly defined.  We are a campus resource for information related to environmental stewardship, university sustainability processes and community outreach.

To achieve these goals, the SEC engages students from a variety of backgrounds in campus and community events and fosters sustainability initiatives by investing time and funds into these projects. 

We strive for diverse inclusion of community and campus partners in fostering experimental and innovative projects, and we aim to increase collaboration between campus and community partners.  

Summary of Position:

Under the supervision of the SEC Co-Directors, Project Coordinators develop and implement specific initiatives that seek to enhance the sustainability of our campus. These initiatives can include co-curricular learning opportunities for students (e.g. tours, workshops, speakers, events), green features of our facilities (e.g. water bottle refilling stations, Free Store, bike infrastructure, recycling bins, compost bins), and other projects as assigned by the Co-Directors (e.g. Greenfest, Real Food Challenge). 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and implementation of environmental education programs and projects, including event planning and managing interns (55%)
  • Advocate for sustainability in institutional settings through participation in decision-making bodies and the support of sustainable initiatives and technologies (20%)
  • Contribute to SEC communications, including website, posters, handouts, social media, and weekly newsletter (15%)
  • Other tasks (includes maintaining Free Store, general housekeeping, etc.) (10%)

Qualifications: 

  • An active interest in improving the sustainability of UNC Asheville’s campus, including our grounds and gardens, our transportation infrastructure, our buildings, our water management, our dining halls, our energy consumption, our waste handling, and/or our purchasing practices
  • A desire to promote sustainable living by students, faculty and staff
  • A collaborative working style
  • Self-motivation, innovation, and resourcefulness
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Basic computer proficiency
  • Note: Applicant should be working toward a bachelor’s degree at UNC Asheville and preparing to graduate no sooner than December 2023

Skills and Experience Desired (each applicant need not have all desired skills):

  • Leadership experience
  • Project research, development and management
  • Public speaking skills, including tabling
  • Media and communications proficiency (including basic graphic design, illustration, social media, web site management)
  • Volunteer recruitment and coordination

Hours & Compensation:

Coordinators are expected to work 10 hours per week (including required weekly staff meetings) when classes are in session, primarily at the SEC office at Highsmith Student Union. Compensation is $13.00 per hour and must be reported on a weekly basis. Coordinators are asked to make a commitment of two full terms (Spring & Fall).
