Student Environmental Center Co-Director

About the Student Environmental Center:

A student-led initiative, the Student Environmental Center (SEC) engages students, faculty, staff, and the Asheville community in conversation, advocacy, and action around environmental issues, broadly defined. We are a campus resource for information related to environmental stewardship, university sustainability processes and community outreach.

To achieve these goals, the SEC engages students from a variety of backgrounds in campus and community events and fosters sustainability initiatives by investing time and funds into these projects. 

We strive for diverse inclusion of community and campus partners in fostering experimental and innovative projects, and we aim to increase collaboration between campus and community partners.  

Summary of Position:

Co-directors supervise SEC staff, devise and implement organizational strategy, manage administrative work, and represent the SEC in other areas of the university. Directors provide support for SEC staff, by assigning and tracking projects. Directors also direct the SEC’s activity in order to achieve broader goals. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Supervisory: Lead and organize weekly staff meetings, meet regularly with individual staff members, assign and support staff projects, hire new staff, and review staff work logs (40%)
  • Strategic: Meet weekly with Director of Sustainability, develop proposals and agendas for SEC Advisory Board Meetings, and develop and track Strategic Objectives. Represent sustainability interests at Student Advisory Committee, University Sustainability Council, and in other conversations on campus (40%)
  • Other Administrative: Track and submit expenses and budget (20%)

Qualifications: 

  • An active interest in improving the sustainability of UNC Asheville’s campus, including our grounds and gardens, our transportation infrastructure, our buildings, our water management, our dining halls, our energy consumption, our waste handling, and/or our purchasing practices
  • A desire to promote sustainable living by students, faculty and staff
  • A collaborative working style
  • Self-motivation, innovation, and resourcefulness
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Basic computer proficiency
  • Note: Applicant should have sophomore credits or higher. Applicant must be working toward a bachelor’s degree at UNC Asheville and preparing to graduate no sooner than December 2023.

Hours & Compensation:

Directors are expected to work 15-20 hours per week (including required weekly staff meetings) when classes are in session, primarily at the SEC office at 218 Highsmith Student Union. Compensation is $14 per hour and must be reported on a weekly basis. Directors are asked to make a commitment of two full terms (Spring 2023 to Fall 2023).
