We serve a population of active older adults, most of whom are retired, who join OLLI to take non-credit courses, attend lectures and special programs, and engage in shared interest groups and social events. Most programming takes place at the Reuter Center at UNC Asheville. This is a friendly and collaborative work environment, and we especially seek students who feel comfortable working with older adults and who can demonstrate patience, professionalism, and a positive attitude with our staff and members.

The Student Tech / Office Assistant position involves performing the following tasks:

  • Setting up furnishings and audiovisual equipment in classrooms and other indoor and outdoor spaces for classes, lectures, programs and special events.
  • Providing basic technical support to staff, instructors and presenters for both in-person, online (Zoom), and hybrid (simultaneous in-person/online) environments using desktop computers, laptop computers, projectors, livestream equipment, sound equipment, and hearing loops (assistive listening devices for individuals with hearing loss).
  • Monitoring Zoom classes and meetings to provide support to presenters and participants.
  • Acting as the designated building manager for designated times after hours and on weekends, which involves unlocking/locking doors and classrooms and being a resource for event hosts.
  • Keeping all technology resources well organized and maintained.
  • Providing miscellaneous office support, which may include providing customer service to OLLI members in-person, online, and by phone, performing basic office tasks, updating databases and spreadsheets, and other duties in support of staff.

This position requires the following competencies or the willingness to learn them:
  • General computer literacy, especially using Microsoft PowerPoint and the Google Suite (Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Forms).
  • Ability to use Zoom, including hosting meetings and assisting co-hosts and participants.
  • Familiarity with both PC and Mac computers.
  • Patience and clarity when explaining tech concepts.
  • Ability to provide quality and constructive customer service.
  • Ability to problem-solve, sometimes with little time.
  • Ability to move and lift furniture and other items up to 35 lbs.
  • Ability to be punctual and reliable, as all our events run on a set schedule.
  • Flexible availability.

Hours: Up to 20 hours per week, Monday to Friday during our regular business hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.), some weekday evening hours, and occasionally on Saturdays and Sundays for special events.
