Wildlife Protection Intern - Summer
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal advocacy organization, is seeking three (3) remote Interns for the Wildlife Protection department. As a Wildlife Protection Intern you will be introduced to state and federal wildlife protection policy (i.e. laws and regulations addressing wildlife), and to the animal protection and environmental protection fields. You will also learn about and develop the skills and tools necessary to effectively advocate for wild animals through outreach, education, and policy.
You will be responsible for:
- Reading and drafting wildlife-related media and educational materials;
- Researching, compiling, and drafting campaign materials such as reports, memos, factsheets, letters to governmental bodies, letters-to-the-editor, social media materials, or gathering information and creating a database on laws or biological or social science data;
- Analyzing and drafting informational documents relating to data, public records, and policies;
- Supporting legislation, regulation, and/or ballot initiative campaigns through phone-banking, canvassing (optional), or other activities as needed;
- Attending and participating in staff meetings;
- Providing weekly updates on work progress;
- Completing a non-credit online Campaigns course on building an effective campaign.

Qualifications and Requirements:
- Desire to learn about wildlife protection advocacy in the United States;
- Superior written and oral communication skills, as well as strong critical thinking skills;
- Strong research, writing, problem-solving, and time management skills;
- Able to adapt quickly to changing priorities;
- Able to use discretion and good judgment, keeping in mind the confidential nature of some aspects of the work;
- Able to work independently and on a team;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word;
- Must be courteous, diplomatic, and maintain a high level of professionalism;
- Some knowledge of wildlife, conservation and animal protection issues preferred.
