Summer 2022 Internship in Washington DC!

The Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), a non-profit whose mission is to transform global security by driving systemic solutions to nuclear and biological threats imperiling humanity, is now taking internship applications for Summer 2022. Our highly competitive program offers approximately 6-8 paid positions 3x a year to undergraduate students with at least two years of study, graduate students, and/ or those who demonstrate co-equal qualifying experience. Interns are paid $15.20 an hour; NTI also welcomes applicants from university-sponsored internship programs.

NTI Interns play a critical role within each of our teams working to advance our mission objectives while learning more about existential risks to humanity. Our internships are substantive opportunities where interns are deeply embedded into NTI’s teams, contributing research and analysis to ongoing projects, but do include administrative components as needed. NTI’s internship program prioritizes building skills and experience and includes structured professional development opportunities -- many intern alumni have gone on to have stellar careers in their chosen fields.

NTI employees are gradually returning to the DC office, with a full return of all employees planned prior to the start of our Summer Intern Session.

NTI is registered to employ staff living in DC, Maryland, or Virginia. We believe that the intern experience is most beneficial when in-person; and interns should plan to work in person in our DC office for the course of this internship.

If you live in VA, outside of a commutable distance from DC, and are not able to relocate to the DC area for your internship, you may be considered for a remote internship. Candidates who cannot relocate to live in DC, Maryland, or Virginia during their internship, even if working remote, cannot be considered at this time.
In accordance with NTI’s duty to provide and maintain a workplace that is free of known hazards, we have adopted a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy. All employees, including interns working in our D.C. office, will be required to be fully vaccinated, unless a reasonable accommodation for medical reasons or sincerely held religious beliefs is requested and approved. A signed affirmation statement will be required to affirm vaccine status.

The deadline for submission of completed applications is 11:59pm ET on Friday, March 4, 2022.

Because of the volume of applications, we will not be able to respond to individual inquiries, but all final decisions are made by Monday, March 28, 2022.

Summer 2022 Term starts Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at 9:00am and ends no later than August 19, 2022. Your end date will be agreed upon with your supervisor based on your personal circumstances.

If you have any questions or specific requests, please indicate that in your cover letter.
