SECU Public Fellows Internship - Small Business Technology Development Center

The State Employees Credit Union Public Fellows Internship program offers current UNC Asheville students internships with high quality nonprofit and government organizations focused on improving life in rural North Carolina for a diverse array of residents. SECU Public Fellows interns will work full-time (38-40 hours per week) from June 6th to August 1, 2022 at their internship site while being paid $15.50/hour by UNC Asheville (up to $4,960 per internship), funded by a grant from the SECU Foundation.

If offered a SECU Public Fellows Internship from a SECU site, students must enroll in IST 325 for the summer, a remote 3-credit hour course that will provide professional development for students to make the most of their internship experience.

To be eligible for the SECU Public Fellows Internship at UNC Asheville, students must:
  • be residents of North Carolina
  • be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program at UNC Asheville
  • submit a resume to include leadership and volunteer service
  • submit a cover letter to include career goals and explain how they are uniquely qualified for the SECU Public Fellows Internship program.

Students who intend to remain in North Carolina after graduation and serve North Carolinians through government or nonprofit work are strongly preferred. We are seeking students who demonstrate leadership ability, a commitment to volunteer service, a commitment to serving rural North Carolina as the start to their careers, with strong writing ability.

The due date for the SECU Public Fellows Internship application is March 7th. Those who meet the criteria listed above will be forwarded to ABCCM for an interview for the specific internship listed below. The site will determine their preferred candidate.

Small Business Technology Development Center (SBTDC)
Project Description & Deliverables
• To provide an extensive internal/external communications and marketing strategy for the UNCA/WCU SBTDC program. To include but not limited to;
o Transitioning to new e-newsletter platform
o Creating an updated media contact lists
o Creating content and calendar for e-newsletter, SM, and training events
o Creation of marketing templates to be used customer facing

• This is a hybrid position where one will be able to work out of the office as well as have responsibility to be present in the Asheville office for staff meetings and other project based learning opportunities. In office presence can also provide the opportunity for one to learn how to work within teams in an in office culture. *Subject to negotiation depending upon candidate’s needs.

Duties and responsibilities

Marketing
• Developing new marketing strategies
• Set Up and transition to an e-newsletter platform
• Assist with developing content for SBTDC, eNewsletter, and training events
• Developing a SM plan, brainstorming regarding fresh engaging content
• Helping with current SM platforms and content creation
• Reviewing current marketing activities for weaknesses and developing solutions within budget constraints
• Create marketing templates to be used for external marketing materials and outreach
• Create media contact lists and help build awareness of program to various media outlets
• Research and assist with finding good video content software
• Attend networking and partnership events. You will work with the Director to define what those are through the internship.
• Brainstorming fresh advertising ideas
• Assist with internal and external event preparation and follow-up.

Business Counselor Support
• Conduct market research on various industries.
• Review client business and marketing plans for improvements.
• Assist team in working with clients on Website Reviews, research, and report compilation

Qualifications
• Effective communication skills and adaptable communication style for interacting with team members, upper management and clients
• Great organizational skills in order to be on track with all projects
• Strong time managements skills and independence
• Knowledge of Mailchimp and/or similar e-marketing platform
• Knowledge of marketing-related business practices, including advertising, market research, technology
• Experience with various SM platforms, and Microsoft suite
