Automation Controls Engineer

Job Description: Atom Power is digitizing power technologies to enable smart communication between electrical sources and end use equipment which is essential to our country’s clean energy transition. We are growing fast and seeking an Automation Controls Engineer to identify and deliver best-in-class automated assembly solutions to build next-generation capability in our manufacturing organization.


Responsibilities:

  • Own the definition of equipment, process requirements, costs and timelines to support the development of a highly automated assembly process for future Atom Power products
  • Deployment, qualification and implementation of automated equipment into production
  • Actively participate in early conceptual and design engineering activities to ensure the end product is designed for automation, manufacturability and test
  • Ensure that all equipment and processes comply with applicable standards, company policy and all Health and Safety Laws, Acts, Regulations and Codes
  • Implement (ANSI/RIA15.06/OSHA compliant) control reliable safety systems for safeguarding robots, gantries, conveyors, and other high-volume manufacturing equipment
  • Manage external automation solution companies during specification, cost negotiations, design review and approval, delivery, and installation
  • Utilizes Industrial Engineering techniques and Lean concepts with the intent of improving process flows, reducing operational expenses, improving productivity, and ensuring safe and ergonomic working conditions
  • Characterize and validate automated processes using a data driven approach such as Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility, Cpk, etc.
  • Provide applicable training to sustaining teams to support automated equipment and processes after deployment into production
  • Creating technical specifications for automated manufacturing equipment
  • Some travel is expected for vendor visits and equipment run-off and qualification


Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Demonstrated proficiency designing and debugging automated manufacturing assembly processes and equipment
  • Experience programming Cartesian, SCARA, Articulated and Collaborative robots
  • Proficiency with some type of CAD such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD or CATIA
  • Experience with PLCs, HMIs, Field Bus Networks and Machine Vision Systems
  • In depth knowledge of Electrical Standards (NFPA79, National Electric code, UL508A)
  • In depth knowledge of Safety standards (ANSI/RIA15.06, OSHA)
  • Familiarity with electrical prints and standards for Industrial equipment
  • Experience transitioning products and processes from prototype to production
  • Able to work under pressure while managing competing demands and tight deadlines
  • Strong conceptual, strategic thinking, problem solving, technical and analytical skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills
  • Solution driven mind-set with an eye to connect the dots and can-do attitude
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Previous experience in a high volume manufacturing environment
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment that is fast paced and demanding
  • Must be self-directed, have excellent initiatives and organizational skills


Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science or related specialized disciplines such as Mechatronic Engineering, Automation Engineering or Robotics
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a hands-on Automation Controls Engineer or equivalent position working on automation and/or electromechanical assembly solutions


Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting or standing while working on equipment.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
