Since 1998, Children First/Communities In Schools has hosted a ProjectPOWER AmeriCorps team. Project POWER/AmeriCorps members help schools and non-profit organizations leverage limited financial resources and build a network of service among community members.

The primary objective of this program is to provide increased enrichment and mentoring services to vulnerable youth in the city and county in the form of a year of service. Additionally, Project POWER/AmeriCorps seeks to empower community members to increase access to basic needs services for families in need with an extensive volunteer component that includes recruitment, training and support of volunteers as well as community outreach.  

Job Responsibilities
  • Pre-K School Readiness Initiatives
  • K-12 Academic Engagement, STEM, and After-School Initiatives Provide direct services in schools and after-school programs
  • Design & implement enrichment activities (STEM, cooking, and gardening programs, small group literacy & math inventions and tutoring)
  • Mentor students
  • Coordinate volunteers 
  • Provide in-direct services in area organizations combating food insecurity, homelessness, and the achievement gap
  • Develop and/or enhance existing resources and systems for children and families in WNC
  • Increase program reach Implement educational programming
  • Provide support with community outreach and volunteer management
