Project Green Course: Program Lead & Course Facilitator
Turning Green is a global, student-led movement devoted to education and advocacy around environmentally sustainable and socially responsible choices for individuals, schools, and communities. Turning Green seeks to engage youth in the transition from conventional to conscious living to sustain a healthy, just, and thriving planet. TG is a 501(c)3 nonprofit based in Sausalito, CA.
We are seeking a motivated, go-getter, passionate education professional to continue developing and play a leadership role for Project Green Course ("PGCourse"), a 15-week virtual program for university undergraduate and graduate students from around the world. We are a fast-paced, start-up-like nonprofit organization with a small dedicated team and phenomenal student interns, who this candidate will report to and manage. The course focuses on climate justice, sustainability, advocacy and public health, set to broaden perspectives, illustrate vital intersections, and sharpen critical thinking, leadership, communication and professional skills — to activate next generation agents of change with passion and purpose.
Candidates should have experience with remote learning platforms, commitment to environmental and social justice, and track record of working effectively with diverse student groups. The ideal candidate for this role thrives when many things are thrown their way, managing time, priorities and multidimensional relationships with the TG team, interns, students, academic advisors, speakers, other NGOs and more. Turning Green team members are highly adaptable and collaborative, eager to listen, learn, and lead.
This position is a temporary part time role, lasting from June/July 2021 through December 2021. In addition to program development and coordination responsibilities, the Program Lead will also facilitate PGCourse once it begins. They must be available and ready to work with the team to lead two sessions each week (from September to November 2021) and oversee Climate Action Projects from November through mid December, while continuing to coordinate all Course components with the team.
Responsibilities: Course Development
- Meet pressing needs of organization, Turning Green, Executive Director and team members to prepare, launch and deliver on PGCourse in a short time frame
- Finalize Project Green Course curriculum and create weekly lesson plans based on the existing outline to achieve stated Course goals, while meeting needs of students.
- Collaborate with staff and team on additional course content, materials and resources.
- Manage extraordinary Course intern team on materials and course logistics, providing guidance and support
- Coordinate opportunities with Turning Green’s companion program, Project Green Challenge in October
- Work with team to review student applications and interview potential candidates to finalize the student cohort
- Manage the communication with selected applicants to notify them of acceptance and information and pre work in the lead up to course
- Continue guest speaker and contributor outreach and confirmation, and manage logistics
- Establish relationships with the Academic Advisory Board
- Review and incorporate course feedback from the Academic Advisory Board
- Finalize Teaching Assistants (TAs) and coordinate professional development to support TAs to be successful in their role
- Work with TAs to develop Discussion Group plans, materials, and resources
- Work with communication team to develop communication plan for the Course
Responsibilities: Course Facilitation & Coordination
- Facilitate a culture of tolerance, inclusity, respect, and collaboration for a global cohort of emerging young leaders and teaching assistants
- Coordinate with guest speakers, workshop hosts, panelists. Introduce speakers and as needed moderate panel discussions
- Support teaching assistants in their leadership role with student Discussion Groups
- Work with team to monitor course website and student forum. Support TAs in responding to forum questions, reflection questions, and journal activities
- Work with TA’s on outside class activities for the Course cohort, extending learning opportunities and community building
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in environmental studies, science or sustainability preferred (Relevant Experience could satisfy)
- Educational leadership experience; formal or informal teaching experience (at the high school level or higher), curriculum development, lesson planning, group facilitation
- Extensive understanding and experience within the “environmental space,” knowledge of current environmental topics, issues and solutions
- Previous leadership and mentorship experience
- Passionate about student empowerment and education
- Love for the environment and drive to create a healthy, just and resilient future
- Great verbal and written communications skills, dynamic and engaging public speaker
- Highly organized and able to manage many interrelated projects simultaneously
- Ability to foster an inclusive, supportive and motivated learning community
- Experience with culturally responsive teaching and work with diverse groups of students
- Familiarity or willingness to become familiar with the Turning Green organization’s key programs; Project Green Challenge, and Conscious Kitchen
