Environmental Education Internship

The Bald Head Island Conservancy on Bald Head Island, NC, is seeking recent college graduates with environmental education experience to join our nonprofit team dedicated to the conservation, education, and preservation of barrier islands. Duties are primarily leading public educational programs, but will also include conservation field work and other responsibilities essential to the function of a nonprofit organization. Interns will live and work on an island only accessible by ferry.

Position Responsibilities  

  • Lead environmental education programs, including island and nature tours, live animal programs, kayaking, and fishing for public groups and school groups;
  • Lead off-island education outreach programs at schools, community centers, and festivals;
  • Assist with animal husbandry of educational displays and wildlife emergency response as needed;
  • Assist with conservation field work, including monitoring creek and beach water quality, invasive species treatment, and wildlife population surveys as needed;
  • Assist with nonprofit-related duties such as information center, development and marketing, hosting special events and visiting groups, Conservancy office;
  • Promote and practice stewardship of Conservancy’s facilities, properties, and equipment;
  • Conduct an intern project to enhance exhibit space, lesson plans, or educational opportunities.

Qualifications/Attributes

  • Recent graduate from an accredited college/university majoring in natural sciences, education, or a related course of study
  • Experience working with the public in an educational capacity & ability to engage diverse audiences
  • Growth mindset & curiosity, detail-oriented, and possess strong communication skills
  • Experience with and strong commitment to living and working in a remote location through quiet winter months with a small team
  • Ability to be self-directed as well as work within a team environment
  • Computer proficiency with knowledge of MS Office and G Suite applications
  • Ability to work in a physically challenging environment, including extreme temperatures, while keeping an upbeat personality
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License, be able to lift 40 lbs, and pass a background check

Details

The internship will run from mid-August 2021 through May 2022, with an anticipated start date of August 16, 2021. Work is generally between the hours of 8:30 - 5, but periodically, education programs will be at unusual hours including evening Bald Head After Dark and Turtle Walk programs that end at midnight. Weekend work is required. Average work week is 45-50 hrs. Days off will vary based on time of year, but interns will typically have 1-2 days off per week. Interns live in provided on-campus housing. Compensation

Interns will receive a stipend of $800 per month (pre-tax). Also provided are shared living quarters in the BHI Conservancy dorm, utilities including wireless internet, parking for a vehicle at the Deep Point Marina, and a weekly ferry ticket for trips between the island and the mainland, valued at $560/month.
