Position Details
Stewards Individual Placements (SIP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. SIP in partnership with the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) seeks one Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization (AMLER) Program Analyst AmeriCorps Member to serve in a year-long position to provide crucial insight into a relatively new and exciting program.

One of the major work products for this AmeriCorps member will be a written report that includes research of best practices, and suggestions on how the region, and possibly agency, can improve the written policies/guidance documents and oversight and management of the AMLER Program. The member may also assist with the drafts of these policy documents. In addition, the member may review and consolidate state reports, progress, and successes thus far, as pulled from grant materials, which will assist the region in its congressional report submission to OSMRE headquarters. With that, the member will have the opportunity to go into the field to visit AMLER project sites to see results in person. 
 
Additionally, the member will determine best practices for storing and accessing program reports and other documents. During their tenure, the member will have the opportunity to participate in and learn grants management and processing of all OSMRE grant programs, and have the opportunity to improve our policies/guidance documents to our grant recipients and assist OSMRE in the oversight and management of AMLER.
 
The AmeriCorps member will conduct online research of Federal agencies grants policies and practices, as they relate to programs similar to OSMRE’s AMLER program. The member will also electronically pull AMLER reports to review and summarize them for improved understanding of the program. The main goal for the AmeriCorps member will be a written product that includes research of best practices, a summary of OSMRE’s current policies and procedures, and possibly offer suggestion on how the region, and possibly agency, can improve their oversight and management of AMLER. The analysis of the AMLER program this Member would provide is extremely important to capture the successes and areas for change in the program.

Position Responsibilities will include:
  • Research of other Federal programs similar to the AMLER program
  • Compilation and summarization of AMLER grant reports
  • Determination of best practices for storing and accessing program reports and other documents
  • Compilation and analysis of other grant data specific to AMLER, including project successes, real property, etc.
  • Presenting analysis and findings to OSMRE staff to improve AMLER program

  • Background in Environmental Policy
  • General computer skills
