Historic Structures & Landscapes Technician - AmeriCorps

The Carpentry & Landscapes Technician AmeriCorps position is an opportunity to support the National Park Service management of the natural and cultural resources at Cane River Creole National Historical Park. Established in 1994, this 63-acre park is split between the Oakland and Magnolia Plantations with a total of 67 structures between the two sites. These structural remnants and landscapes reflect the history of plantation life and the Creole culture that shaped it. 

Term:
July 2021 - December 2021 or May 2022
The selected candidate will be able to choose whether they would like to serve a six- or eleven-month term

Responsibilities:
During the six- or eleven-month, full-time term of service, this member will be a part of the NPS maintenance team managing these resources, including vegetation management, deferred maintenance, and general custodial tasks. Members will be expected to use a variety of hand and power tools for these projects. Vegetation management may include mowing, weeding, edging, pruning, and planting. Deferred maintenance will focus on the repair, restoration, and cleaning of structure exteriors. Members will receive carpentry training with the potential for light masonry skills through their service. General custodial tasks will include cleaning and trash collection of public facilities. This opportunity should give members a broad introduction to the operations and tasks of entry-level maintenance positions with the National Park Service. 

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Between the ages of 21-28
  • US Citizenship or lawful permanent US Resident
  • Ability to pass a National Service Criminal History Check
  • Ability and willingness to work outdoors in all weather types while doing hard, often repetitive, labor with hand & power tools
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people
  • Commitment to complete the entire term of service

The ideal candidate for this position would be from the Natchitoches, LA area with an interest in launching their career with NPS.
