Research Engineer, Atomic-Molecular-Optical (AMO) Physics
Research Engineer, Atomic-Molecular-Optical (AMO) Physics
Princeton, NJ
Job Description:
SRI International's Advanced Technology and Systems Division (ATSD) performs research across a wide range of disciplines, from novel material development to advanced optical, radar, and imaging systems, transitioning technology from basic R&D to fieldable prototypes.
Our SRI campus in Princeton, NJ has an immediate opening for a Research Engineer within ATSD, specifically to support the growth of our activities in neutral-atom quantum sensors. This position will also encompass characterization of novel optical and photonic devices.
The candidate will support the development of a variety of advanced table-top and compact quantum sensors and will make contributions to research and development programs spanning quantum-based magnetometry, electrometry, and quantum-based inertial navigation.
The candidate will be working with principle investigators experienced in AMO-physics, and the candidate’s activity will comprise the following: supporting vapor cell and cold-atom cell optical-atom spectroscopy, instrumentation of complex table-top experiments, laser-optical design and alignment, system calibration, data-collection and analysis.
The position will be part of a close-knit team of applied physicists and engineers working across SRI on leading-edge R&D projects for our government and commercial customers. The activity will be very hands-on, operating over a variety of projects that involve the development of compact quantum-based sensor prototypes and enabling system demonstrations.
Some specifics activities may include:
- Supporting and developing table-top quantum experimental systems.
- Alignment of optical and laser systems, including fibers and waveguides in support of quantum sensing activities.
- Programming for instrumentation, data acquisition, and analysis (LabView, Matlab, etc)
- Ultra-high-vacuum system assembly
Qualifications :
- B.S. or M.S. in Applied Physics or Physics or equivalent, with 0-5 years’ experience post-degree.
- Preferably the candidate will have hands-on laboratory experience, for example within university research labs, external co-op/internships, or prior employment experience.
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Ability to transfer/obtain/maintain a U.S. government security clearance required. See http://www.dss.mil/psmo-i/ps_faqs.html
The candidate must have strong technical knowledge in physical measurements and instrumentation, with familiarity with common lab measurement equipment. Skills should include a subset of:
- Skilled in common lab measurement equipment and techniques
- Experience characterizing/testing electronic, photonic and/or atomic devices
- Experience with table-top optical systems
- Experience with optical-quantum experiments, vapor cell or cold-atom
- Basic electrical circuits and electrical prototyping, including soldering
- Physical measurement and instrumentation
- Programming experience for instrumentation and data analysis (e.g. Matlab, Labview, C++,…)
- Working knowledge of data acquisition and control systems (e.g. National Instruments) and signal processing
Intangibles:
- Detail-oriented
- Strong written and verbal communications skills
- Able to work in a team environment
- Self-motivated
- Must possess a results-oriented approach
- Interest in multiple technical areas
- Capable of effectively delegating project tasks to team members
