Budget & Tax Center Undergraduate Internship

Overall Responsibility
The Budget & Tax Center (BTC), a project of the North Carolina Justice Center, is seeking a full-time Intern for the Summer of 2021. The BTC UNDERGRADUATE INTERN will support the development of a portfolio of research and tools for local and state leaders to pursue an equitable recovery from COVID-19. This internship provides the successful candidate with an opportunity to get broad understanding of fiscal and economic issues at the state level, engagement with elected and civic leaders in the state and in target communities and exposure to research and practice for building an equitable economy.
 
The UNDERGRADUATE INTERN will work to support analysis on how COVID-19 is deepening longstanding economic inequalities and policy choices which can create a more equitable recovery. The INTERN will have the opportunity to engage with the state legislative process, collaborate with colleagues on producing budgetary and policy analysis, and tools for using research to shape the policy debate. 
 
Job Duties:
  • Conduct research and analysis using federal and state databases and various methods to contribute to a portfolio of work on economic equity
  • Provide research assistance in the development of the State of Working NC report released each Labor Day
  • Produce policy background memos, literature reviews and other analysis in support of priority work for the Budget & Tax Center
  • Support research on how employee ownership can play a role in North Carolina’s economic recovery
  • Support the Justice Center’s mission to improve the equality of opportunity for low-income North Carolinians.
 
 
Qualifications:
·      Undergraduate coursework in economics, public policy, or other relevant field
·      Ability to find, gather and synthesize data and information from a diverse variety of qualitative and quantitative sources.
·      Excellent quantitative analysis skills, including competency in Excel.
·      Demonstrated commitment to the mission of the improving social justice through progressive fiscal and budget policies.

Because we are a non-profit organization entirely dependent on grants and donations, we encourage you to apply for funding through your school and to explore other funding opportunities. Limited funding will be available from the Justice Center.
