Dam Inventory Crew Member

GLCC Dam Crew Members are responsible for working with their partner to safely and efficiently assess barriers to fish passage in the Lake Superior and Lake Huron watersheds.

The Dam Crew will be working on projects that are primarily located in the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan, with some regional travel possible. Crew Members gain professional experience operating a drone, monitoring for environmental quality, and following field inventory procedures. Crew Members work in partnership with U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service partners who specialize in fisheries and hydrology. Examples of project work include:
  • Receive FAA drone pilot certification and training
  • Complete dam & culvert inventory data sheets
  • Operate drones to collect aerial imagery
  • Record fish passage and structural characteristics of dams and culverts

Required Qualifications:
  • Available for 6 weeks beginning May 20th, 2021
  • Able to perform physical labor in the outdoors in all types of weather
  • Work and live well with a partner
  • Comfortable camping in a tent for up to two consecutive weeks
  • Willing and able to drive a vehicle for several hours in a day
  • Enjoy hiking several miles a day, sometimes off-trail
  • Willingness to follow workplace Covid-19 policies

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Drone operation and experience
  • ArcMap GIS software experience
  • GPS experience
  • Field work and data collection experience
