The Oregon Health Authority (OHA), Public Health Division (PHD), Radiation Protection Services in Portland, OR is recruiting for one Radiation Health Physicist to consult with public and private officials on radiation and safety issues. Radiation Protection Services promotes the health and safety of the people in Oregon by working to protect them from unnecessary exposure to radiation sources including X-ray equipment, radioactive materials, tanning beds and other radiation-generating devices.

What will you do?
As a Radiation Health Physicist, you will interpret and explain statues, rules, policies and procedures to registrants; conduct on-site reviews of registrant facilities to determine compliance with and adherence to standards; identify needed corrective action and follow-up to verify compliance; review registrant's radiation safety program requirements and explain and/or recommend areas needing improvement; and instruct individuals or groups of registrants on methods and procedures for compliance with program regulations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

NOTE: The goal of this recruitment is to fill this position at the Environmental Health Specialist 3 level. However, we encourage candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for an Environmental Health Specialist 2 to apply, as we may consider under-filling this position until the selected candidate meets the minimum qualifications for an Environmental Health Specialist 3. Under-fill training will not exceed two years.

Environmental Health Specialist 3 ($4641.00 to $6780.00)
Two years of experience equivalent to an Environmental Health Specialist 2 working under general supervision, conducting environmental health and/or hazardous materials investigations; inspecting facilities and equipment for environmental health regulation compliance; investigating and assessing the impact of adverse environmental conditions on the public health; preparing health permits if applicable; conducting studies and surveys; and developing solutions to environmental problems;
AND
A Bachelor's degree with 45 quarter (30 semester) hours in an environmental or physical science.

Environmental Health Specialist 2 - Under-fill option ($3847.00 to $5607.00)
Two years of experience working under the general direction of a Registered Sanitarian inspecting facilities and equipment for environmental health regulation compliance; investigating and assessing the impact of adverse environmental conditions on the public health; and preparing health permits
AND
A Bachelor's degree with 45 quarter or 30 semester hours in an environmental science, a physical science, a natural science, sanitary engineering, or other courses related to environmental sanitation.

REQUESTED SKILLS
The following skills, knowledge and experience are desired:

  • Possess education and experience in the scientific or medical field.
  • Experience with sources of radiation and/or inspecting radioactive material or X-Ray facilities.
  • Experience and/or knowledge in reviewing/preparing license applications or machine registrations to ensure regulatory requirements are met.
  • Ability to evaluate license and registration applications, and communicate with prospective licensees/registrants regarding missing information or clarification of supplied information.
  • Experience working with software such as Microsoft Office Suite, Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.
  • Experience working with external stakeholders, customers, licensees, registrants and other local, state and federal agencies.
  • Experience working in a team oriented, performance-based setting.
  • Ability to interpret and explain statues, rules, policies and procedures to licensee's or registrants.
  • Able to identify and follow-up needed corrective actions to verify compliance.
  • Evaluation of radiation safety program requirements and ability to explain or recommend areas of needed improvement.
  • Ability to instruct public or private officials on radiation health and safety issues.
  • Experience promoting a culturally competent and diverse work environment.
