The Opportunity:
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Bridge and Structures Office is seeking an experienced structural engineer to fill the vacancy of Bridge Engineer 5 in Tumwater, WA.
 
As the successful incumbent, you will be relied upon for expert-level knowledge in the design and construction of complex structures including reinforced and post-tensioned concrete bridges, steel bridges including trusses, rehabilitation and retrofit of existing structures. You will be relied upon to mentor less-experienced engineers in design and construction of structures, act as a chapter author for maintaining and updating office practices through regular updates to the WSDOT Bridge Design Manual, and perform as a project manager on large or multiple bridge projects. You will have a thorough understanding of the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design and Seismic Guide Specifications, WSDOT BDM, Standard Specifications and Special Provisions and the necessary software tools used for structural design. You will review and coordinate the development of Requests for Proposals for Design-Build contracts and act as a Bridge Office reviewer during the contract design and construction phases. You will also perform as a Bridge Technical Advisor for construction projects when assigned.

This position will perform the following work:

  • Performs intricate designs and checks of transportation bridges and structures of major complexity, size and importance. Performs intricate designs and checks. Reviews design work for constructability. Provides technical support to HQ Construction and Region Project Offices during construction of bridges and other structures.
  • Performs analysis and design and develops details for rehabilitation and retrofit of complex bridges and structures.
  • Acts as project manager and design coordinator for design projects with multiple transportations structures. Reviews all work for consistency and accuracy.
  • Design-Build Projects - Prepares Request for Proposals (RFP) for bridge and miscellaneous structure requirements, evaluates Alternate Technical Concepts (ATCs), reviews design submittals, and supports construction activities involving bridge and other miscellaneous structure projects.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • This position requires intermittent, infrequent, in-state travel.
 
An ideal candidate for this position will have:
  • Bachelors of Science, Masters or Doctorate Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or equivalent.
  • Washington State Structural Engineer (SE) License is required.
  • Minimum of one year as a Bridge Engineer 4.
  • Understanding and work experience with the AASTHO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and AASTHO Guide Specifications for LRFD Seismic Bridge Design.
  • Understanding and work experience with WSDOT BDM, Standard Specifications and Special Provisions.
  • Understanding and expert level experience in analysis software for design of bridges and structures.
  • Knowledge and experience of designs and checks of bridges and structures of major complexity, size and importance.
  • Valid driver's license
