Materials Tester-Transportation Technician 3 In-Training

WSDOT's Lacey Project Engineering Office in Olympia is currently seeking a Materials Tester who has a background in construction or as an engineering technician who has exceptional aptitude for attention to detail. The incumbent will perform skilled technical work in support of engineering projects. The Materials Tester will provide essential support in monitoring contractor's activities during construction and ensuring the project is constructed in accordance with Contract Plans and Specifications. This individual will perform materials sampling, testing, acceptance procedures and assists the project inspectors in performing daily inspection of work performed.

This position will perform the following work:

• Assist with inspection of roadway and bridge construction.
• Perform a variety of job site tests, record test data, and interpret test results.
• Sample and test Hot Mix Asphalt, Cement Concrete, and other surfacing materials.
• Sample and perform aggregate tests such as sieve analysis, sand equivalent, and moisture content.
• Use nuclear gauge to test densities of asphalt concrete, surfacing and earthwork.
• Write and receive tickets for measurements of materials.
• Assist in staking and surveying.
• Visibly demonstrate your commitment to the Department's safety program.
• Communicate both orally and in writing, and work in a cooperative and courteous manner with the public, contractors, supervisors, and other department staff.
• Other duties as assigned.

Please note that this is an in-training position that offers a career path and on-the-job training. This position allows you to progress through the Transportation Technician field, and achieve the goal class of a Transportation Technician 3. Candidates will be considered as a Transportation Technician 2 or Transportation Technician 3, depending on qualifications.
 
To be considered at the Transportation Technician 2 level, an ideal candidate is required to have at least one of the following:

• High school diploma/GED AND two (2) years of experience performing basic technical engineering work as a Transportation Technician 1 or equivalent.
• An Associate's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
• Completion of technical program of at least 1,200 instructional hours.

To be considered at the Transportation Technician 3 level, an ideal candidate is required to have at least one of the following:

• Two years of experience performing semi-skilled technical engineering work as a Transportation Technician 2 or equivalent.
• A Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
• Certification as an Engineer-in-Training.
• A Land Surveyor's license.

 An ideal candidate at either level will also have:

• Knowledge of materials testing, construction practices, and contract administration.
• Knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, and methods, with the ability to apply them.
• Experience in reading, drawing, and interpreting detailed engineering plans.
• The ability to perform and check engineering calculations.
• The ability to lift and carry 30 lbs. and work in an outdoor environment to include navigating uneven terrain.
• The ability to obtain and maintain certifications for construction materials testing.
• Flexibility to adjust work schedule to coincide with contractor activities including the ability to travel as needed, work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callout/standby.
• A valid driver's license.

 
Note:
This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, you are required to become a member of the PTE, Local 17, or arrange to pay that union a representational fee. The union shop requirement shall be effective on the first day of the month following the employee's initial 30 days in this classification.
