Community Outreach Intern

Job Summary

The Community Outreach Intern with Asheville Parks and Recreation will mainly provide program opportunities for youth and families of low-income status. This will include programming in public housing, recreation centers or other areas to ensure that programs are being offered equitably.

Intern will be paid a stipend total of $2500 (will be split into monthly payments).

This internship position will NOT be eligible for benefits, paid leave time (vacation, sick, holiday) nor participation in the retirement system.


The length of internship is 10 weeks, 40 hour/week (which may include weekend and nights), resulting in 400 total working hours. The start date will be June 4th, 2018 and end August 10th, 2018.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Interns will be responsible for setting up areas for programming to give youth and families easy access to recreation programs.
  • She/he will also be responsible for developing and implementing programs for youth 5 to 16 years old in these areas.
  • This position will also work with current programs offered through Asheville Parks and Recreation to provide enrichment activities and supplemental programming.

Required Education & Experience

All candidates must:

  • Be currently enrolled in a four-year college or university in Parks and Recreation Management, Leisure Services or a related field.
  • Meet all necessary requirements with respective college or university to be eligible.
  • Have excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Hold a valid driver's license.
  • Complete a probation period of the first two initial weeks of the internship will be instituted. During that time period, the Recreation Supervisor reserves the right to dismiss an intern if it is determined the intern is not adequately prepared to perform the functions required of the internship.

Internship Requirements 
  • Eligible candidates shall have taken university coursework related to the internship opportunity.
  • Each eligible candidate shall complete an Asheville Parks and Recreation internship application.
  • Each eligible candidate shall include a current transcript of university coursework.
  • Selected candidates shall meet department standards for drug screening, background check, and driving record review, as required by a particular position, as well as be eligible to work in the United States (if applicable).
  • All applicants must have a CPR/First Aid Certification by the first day of camp on 6/11/18.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Working Conditions

  • General knowledge of the methods and practices of recreation programs including knowledge of community programming and behavior management skills.
  • The ability to plan, research and lead recreation activities.
  • Ability to plan activities indoors or outdoors as well as the ability to plan age-appropriate activities for inclusive recreation.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, program participants and the general public.
  • Ability to enforce rules and regulations and maintain program standards.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records.
