Program Co-Coordinator - Vance Afterschool

Job Summary

Do you want to help provide quality after-school activities to local children? The Parks and Recreation department is looking for an energetic and reliable individual to join our team!

The City of Asheville is currently hiring one (1) part-time Program Coordinator for the after-school program in the Parks and Recreation Department. The purpose of this position is to assist in the operation and maintenance of a recreation facility and carry out, supervise and lead recreation programs and activities within an assigned district or park.

Approximately 25 hours per week, generally 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Additional hours as needed.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides organization and administrative assistance in providing a diverse collection of recreation programs.
  • Prepares facilities for activities by opening and closing facility, unlocking doors/gates and windows and turning lights on and off.
  • Supervises youth and adult participants in outdoor activities, plans and participates in activities and teaches classes.
  • Performs administrative duties by answering telephones, scheduling facility activities, providing information to the public on recreation programs, preparing and maintaining records on attendance and participation, collecting and processing applicable fees and preparing and filing time sheets, repair work orders and other forms.
  • Maintains cleanliness of facility, bulletin boards, plantings and decorations.
  • Attends regular staff meetings to discuss new programs and issues.
  • Drives City vehicles for activity groups.
  • Acts in the absence of the supervisor.
  • Plans, leads and supervises youth in license after school activities.
  • Provides organization and administrative assistance in providing a diverse collection of recreation programs.
 
Supplemental Functions:
  • Performs other similar duties as required.

Required Education & Experience

  • 18 years or older, and
  • High school diploma or equivalency, and
  • Experience in recreation programming or management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
Required Licensing and Certifications:
  • Current CPR/First Aid.
  • Basic School-Aged Care (BSAC) Training & Certification.
  • 2 semester hours in child & youth development and 2 semester hours of school age programming.

  • Ability to research program documents and narrative materials, and develop reports from information gathered.

  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret policy and procedural guidelines and to apply this understanding to tasks.

 Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
  • Occasional outside work or exposure to unpleasant conditions and/or hazards
  • Little physical effort is required.
