The Benefits Specialist supports the Benefits and Employee Relations Manager by coordinating the University’s benefits programs. The employee in this position interprets and applies federal and state guidelines, regulations and laws appropriately, and in a manner that is consistent with university policies and procedures, (e.g., COBRA, HIPAA, ERISA, FMLA, ACA,).

This position will provide professional, high-level customer service support to staff, faculty, and retirees regarding the following benefit programs: health, dental, vision, health care and dependent care/medical FSA accounts, life insurance, AD&D, long term disability, leave of absence, 401(k), 403(b), and 457(b) retirement plans, and other miscellaneous voluntary programs. In addition, this position must effectively present information to a variety of audiences in a clear and concise manner.

This individual must provide superior customer service to internal and external customers; be able to track, audit and prioritize work; and respond quickly and accurately to requests.

Candidate must be a fast learner and have the ability to solve complex problems through research and analysis, and to respond appropriately to various trends and patterns. In addition, the Benefits Specialist must have strong organizational skills and time management skills.

A successful Benefits Specialist will demonstrate professionalism, including high moral and ethical standards, consistency, consideration of others, initiative and a superior work ethic. The Benefits Specialist must be a conscientious self-starter, deadline-driven and customer-service oriented.

Strong verbal and written communication skills are required to assist with development and maintenance of websites and written materials. The Benefits Specialist conducts presentations on various HR topics, special projects, implementation of policies/programs/processes, new employee orientation, etc.

This position serves as liaison between HR and various outside vendors to provide information, resolve problems and interpret policies. Use various information systems to access general and confidential information.

Successful candidates will have the ability to navigate various system and processes, maintain relations with various carriers and vendors, which includes transmitting and retrieving data from their systems and uploading into Banner (HRIS).

The Benefits Specialist must have the ability to analyze, compile, audit and validate crucial eligibility data through multiple computer-based applications in compliance with the Affordable Care Act (ACA), create and prepare reports; compile and model data for reporting information and trends to support decision-making. Candidate must exhibit a strong ability to handle multiple demands with a sense of urgency and attention to detail.
